Type II Public Water Supply

The Type II Water Supply program assures the quality of public drinking water.

According to the State of Michigan, “Type II wells have not less than 15 service connections or serve not fewer than 25 individuals on an average basis not less than 60 days out of the year.”

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) contracts with Environmental Health (EH) to maintain a Type II non-community well program. EH staff surveys these public wells on a routine basis and maintains sampling records.

Type II Wells include Transient and Non-Transient Noncommunity Water Supply (NCWS) described below:

A transient NCWS is a supply that serves 25 or more different people a day at least 60 days of the year (or 15 or more service connections). Examples include churches, rest areas, and restaurants.
Non-transient NCWS is a supply that serves the same 25 or more people at least 180 days of the year. Examples include day care centers, factories, and schools.
