Veterans Affairs Committee meeting convened by Veterans Committee
Chairman Phil Savage at 9:15 A.M.

Reading of the January Committee Meeting Minutes and January
Activity Report:
Motion was made by Mr. Martin to amend the January Minutes as a portion
of the content was “conversational” and did not belong in the Minutes.
The motion was seconded by Mr. Arquette. Motion was, then, made by Mr.
Martin to accept the amended Minutes. Motion was seconded by Mr.
Arquette. January Veterans Affairs’ Activity Report was read.
Applications for General Assistance from the Soldiers’ and
Sailors’ Relief Fund:

rent–$644.00. Motion was made by to deny assistance to applicant
05-01 and seconded. By a 3-0 vote, applicant 05-01 was denied
assistance. |

Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Relief
Application for utility assistance–$129.65. |

Approved for
utility–$129.65. Motion was made to grant assistance of $129.65 for
Consumers Energy and seconded. By a 3-0 vote, applicant 05-02
received $129.65 utility assistance. |

Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Relief
Application for utility–$27.44; winter taxes–$172.37; water–$47.80;
and natural gas–$231.11 totaling–$478.72. |

Approved for all
grants requested–$478.72. Motion was made to grant all requested
assistance. Mr. Arquette stated that he was opposed due to lack of
information. Committee Chair provided the tie breaking vote to grant
all requested assistance. By a 2-1 vote, applicant 05-03 received
all requested assistance totaling $478.72. |

New Business:
Mr. Savage noted that correspondence was received regarding service
officer training provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars service
department. The training is to be held in Lansing on February 16 and
February 17. Mr. Savage stated that the Committee should be given more
than a few days notice regarding training seminars that may involve
budgetary implications. The Director stated that the training was
provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars free of charge. The Director
further stated that County Administration endorses training seminars
provided that the seminars are within the budgetary limitations. Mr.
Savage, then, made a motion to approve attendance at the Veterans of
Foreign Wars training conference, seconded by Mr. Arquette.
The Committee, as a whole, discussed developing a Release of
Information document with Calhoun County Civil Counsel, Nancy Mullett.
Ms. Mullett stated that she would assist in the development of a
release of information form. Ms. Mullett also stated that she would
work on a statement regarding the disclosure of information and the
possible ramifications for falsifying information on an application
for Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Relief.
