Two water testing options are:
- Health Department Visit
Call Environmental Health to make an appointment with a sanitarian to sample your water supply. Sanitarians are available at the time of the visit to answer any water well questions and concerns and determine if additional tests are needed. The basic test includes coliform bacteria and nitrates.
- Do-it-Yourself Kits
Environmental Health offers pre-addressed water bottle kits. You can test for coliform bacteria and water chemistries: nitrate, nitrite, chloride, fluoride, hardness, iron, sodium, and sulfate.
Do-it-Yourself kits can be picked up at the Environmental Health office at 190 E. Michigan Avenue, Battle Creek, MI. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7am – 12 Noon and 1pm to 5pm. Directions are provided with the kit, including the mailing address. Mail to the address provided in the kit along with a check or money order for lab fees ($16 for coliform and $18 for chemistries).
Sample your water supply in the afternoon and ship immediately. Environmental Health suggests checking your post office outgoing mail schedule prior to sampling. Samples are sensitive – if the sample was taken over 30 hours from time of testing, the lab considers the sample invalid.
If you have any questions about this process or need further information, contact Environmental Health at (269) 969-6341.
