The Calhoun County Road Department (CCRD) directly maintains and repairs 87 bridges and more than 1,400 miles of county roads. It also maintains more than 450 miles of state highways throughout Calhoun County on a contract basis. [County maps]
Prior to October 31, 2012, a board of five county road commissioners, who were appointed by the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners for six year terms, governed the Road Commission. The Board of Road Commissioners held regularly scheduled public meetings and was responsible for establishing policies, budget priorities and reviewing operations. As of November 1, 2012, the road commission was absorbed by Calhoun County. The Managing Director of the Road Department now reports to the County Administrator/Controller. County administration oversees all employment practices, including hiring procedures for the department.
Most of the funding for Michigan roads, streets and highways comes from gasoline, diesel fuel and license plate taxes. No general fund (property tax) money from the County is directed to roads in Calhoun County; however, townships contribute money on a matching basis for local road improvements. Federal and state money may also be available for specified roads.
The Road Department’s primary responsibility is to provide reasonably safe roads through construction and maintenance. Our operations include snow removal, pothole patching, seal coating, traffic signals, road signs, bridges, culverts, dust control on gravel roads, roadside mowing, pavement marking, guard rail and various other road related work. Other services include reviewing roads for plats and subdivisions, abandonments and issuing road and soil erosion permits.
