Seasonal Weight Restrictions

The Calhoun County Road Department (CCRD) is lifting Seasonal Weight Restrictions beginning at 6 a.m., Friday, Feb. 16. Weight restrictions are set to protect the roads during the spring thaw and freeze cycle, and may be reinstated depending on weather.

Seasonal Load Limits/Frost Laws help to preserve and protect against wear and tear on Calhoun County Roads that is caused by winter thaw and heavy vehicles.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police may enforce seasonal weight restrictions and speed reductions while the Seasonal Load Limits/Frost Laws are in effect.

There will be no special permits issued while the seasonal weight restrictions are in effect.

In accordance with Public Act 300 of 1949, the following are exempt from weight restrictions; however, speed MUST be reduced to a maximum of 35mph.

  • Milk haulers
  • Agricultural commodities
  • Public utility vehicles

Seasonal weight restrictions help to preserve and protect against the wear and tear on Calhoun County roads caused by the winter thaw and heavy vehicles. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police may enforce the seasonal weight restrictions and speed reductions while in effect. During this restricted period, state law requires the following:

  • Reduction in the maximum axle loads by 35% on all types of roads.
  • Tire loads cannot exceed 450 pounds per inch of tire width.
  • Reduction in the travel speed limit for trucks to a maximum of 35 miles per hour.

The following requirements are for the Calhoun County Road Department’s restricted roadways:

35% REDUCTION
9′ or over between axles
Normal load – 18,000 lbs/axle
Restricted loads – 11,700 lbs/axle

Over 3 1/2′ but under 9′ between axles
Normal load – 13,000 lbs/axle
Restricted loads – 8,450 lbs/axle

Under 3 1/2′ combined weight between axles
Normal load – 18,000 lbs/axle
Restricted loads – 11,700 lbs/axle

Maximum load on any wheel
(lbs/inch of tire width)
Normal load – 700 lbs per inch of tire width
Restricted loads – 450 lbs per inch of tire width
