Infant Safe Sleep

A baby dies nearly every other day in Michigan in an unsafe sleep environment. In Calhoun County, 18 babies died due to sleep related deaths between 2010 and 2015. Evidence suggests that these deaths are overwhelmingly preventable.

Safe Sleep Basics

A safe sleep environment exists when babies always sleep:

  • On their backs
  • In a crib or portable crib
  • On a firm mattress
  • Without pillows, bumpers, blankets, stuffed toys, or infant positioners
  • Without any other person in the sleep space

 Additional Parent Recommendations:

  • Breastfeed to reduce risk of Sudden Infant Death (SIDS)
  • Offer a pacifier at nap time and bedtime
  • Avoid smoke, alcohol, and illicit drug use in the sleep environment.
