      Calhoun County Senior Millage

Senior Services administers tax dollars raised through the Senior Millage. The Senior Millage was first approved by voters in 1996 to fill gaps in available services to help seniors solve life’s problems, and promote health, safety and wellness. The Senior Millage raises approximately $2.5 million in each year. It was last renewed in 2010, and will go before voters to be reauthorized again in 2020.

Senior Millage funds a variety of programs that operate county-wide. It funds over 17 different programs (Click here for list) administered by 11 nonprofit organizations to provide services to Calhoun County residents, age 60 and older. Most Senior Millage funding is distributed through a Request for Proposal system through the County Purchasing Department. Funding is also available for new programs through Program Grants and Mini-Grants.  Senior Millage-funded programs provide services to meet the needs of seniors that cannot be met by the resources of the individual, the senior’s family, volunteers, charitable organizations, or through other state or federal programs.

Community needs and funding priorities are decided by the Senior Millage Allocations Committee (SMAC) which makes recommendations to the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners. The Board of Commissioners appoints members to SMAC and approves funding decisions. SMAC is comprised of 13 community members (Click here for list of members) who serve three year terms and includes two or three Board of Commissioners.  SMAC meets the first Friday of every month except January. Meetings are open and the public is welcome to attend.

Senior Services administers Senior Millage funds, monitors funded organizations, organizes special events for seniors, identifies senior needs, promotes collaboration and advocates for improved services in the community, provides Medicare and Medicaid counseling, and helps seniors connect to services. Services are mostly provided free of charge but some programs encourage a cost-share to help the funding go further. Some programs serve all seniors regardless of income, and some programs are targeted to serve those who are 200% of the Federal poverty level or less to help serve those most in need. Each program has its own guidelines and follows a minimum service standard approved by the Senior Millage Allocation Committee.

For more information or to arrange a presentation to your church or group, please contact Senior Services at 269-781-0846.

Senior Services Mission is to enhance, promote, and ensure the availability of needed quality services for Calhoun County seniors through effective and efficient allocation of County Senior Millage resources.
